Chester

Chester is arguably the richest city in Britain for archaeological and architectural treasures preserved to this day from the time of the Roman occupation. It is also a vibrant mix of cafes, shops and ancient walls and rows.

Chester Cathedral

Chester Cathedral is located within the heart of the city centre. It is a truly remarkable Grade 1 listed building, with a history spanning almost two thousand years. Originally a Saxon Minster, then rebuilt as a Benedictine Abbey, this magnificent building is a national treasure in the heart of the city and is the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Chester.

River Cruise

Sail along the idyllic River Dee on a ChesterBoat luxury showboat be that in the daytime or aboard an evening cruise on The Lady Diana, or the Jackie. Relax on a half hour cruise along the Dee from The Groves. The cruise will take you through the suspensions bridge, past Grosvenor Park and the Earl's eye, following the long sweep of the 'Meadows.' You will pass the beautiful properties and gardens that line the riverside. The boat also has an on-board bar where you can enjoy a drink.

City Wall

Walking the Chester wall is a must-do for every visitor to this city. The walls enclose the centre of Chester and have been standing here since the Romans. The walls provide a great way to see many of the historical sites in the city centre including the Roman Amphitheatre, the Roman Gardens, the Chester Cathedral, the river Dee, The Eastgate Clock and Chester Race Course.

Shopping

Explore the unique Rows and independent shops in the city centre, then stop off at one of the many restaurants or cafes. Chester is a shopper's paradise It has the oldest shop front in England and the inimitable Rows -700 year-old two tier covered shopping galleries giving you 2 high streets in one. Discover the independent side of Chester on the cobbled streets of Watergate Street lined with specialist shops, boutiques and tea rooms in the heart of the city centre.

Racecourse

Chester Racecourse is the oldest Racecourse in Britain. Horse racing at Chester dates back to the early sixteenth century. The racecourse's position in the city makes race meetings at Chester very popular as it is only a very short stroll to all the hotels, bars, shopping and restaurants.

Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo is a zoological garden at Upton by Chester, in Cheshire, England. It is the UK’s number one zoo with over 12000 animals and 400 different species. In July 2015 it was named as the best zoo in the UK and seventh in the world by TripAdvisor.

National B&B Week 2019 - 18th-24th March 2019

Did you know that there are over 20,000 B&Bs in the UK, and that they generate over £2 billion annually to the UK economy? This is something that we think is worth celebrating, that’s why we are participating in National B&B Week 2019!

Mere Brook House has recently celebrated it's 10 year anniversary, and in this past year alone we have hosted countless weddings, celebrations and business meetings and welcomed hundreds of guests, including The Great British Bake Offs Prue Leith. We have also opened our doors to a BBC film crew, who used the house to film a 90 minute drama named "Care" which starred Sheridan Smith and Alison Steadman.

In October 2017 the Mayor of Wirral unveiled a blue plaque in recognition of the incredible Ann Davison, the first female to sail the Atlantic single handed. Ann lived at Mere Brook for four years and the house features in one of her books – in fact she refers to living at Mere Brook as some of her happiest times.

Over the past 10 years we have been honoured to win numerous awards including Bed & Breakfast of the Year and The Independent Business Award at the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards 2017 and after taking a year out we are delighted to be shortlisted at The Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards 2019 in two categories, Hotel of the Year and Independent Tourism Business of the Year. In 2015 we were shortlisted for The National Tourism awards run by Visit England in the bed and breakfast category. Last year we were also awarded a Special Certificate of Excellence from Tripadvisor to celebrate 5 years of consistently excellent reviews!

So from the 18th to the 24th of March 2019 I hope you will join us in applauding all the great things that independent hoteliers contribute to the hospitality industry!

Wirral Borough of Culture 2019

BE PART OF WIRRAL'S BOROUGH OF CULTURE YEAR

logo

I hope you are all aware by now that Wirral is the Borough of Culture for the Liverpool City Region in 2019. This is a relatively new initiative where the spotlight will be put on a different borough of the region each year highlighting existing and new cultural events. St Helens was the first borough in 2018 to lead the way and this year is Wirral's turn.

I am delighted by the amazing programme of events, many of which are new, that are planned for 2019 some of which are listed below - and how amazing it is that Tour of Britain cycle race have also chosen Wirral to be involved in their internationally renowned race.

2019 gives us a real opportunity to showcase Wirral to visitors and put this wonderful place on the map.

There will be many ways that those businesses and organisations involved in offering services and facilities to visitors can get involved and a meeting will be arranged in early March when more of the practical and operational details can be shared which I urge you to attend.

Lorna Tyson,
Chair of Wirral Visitor Economy Network

The first event is 'Animated Square' in Hamilton Square on Saturday 23rd March, for more information see here.
